Every year we throw away millions of kilos of used coffee grounds. In The Netherlands, we throw away about 120 million kilos of used coffee ground, every year. Those numbers are really good it means we are enjoying our coffee very much. However, the trash is creating big problems to the environment. Mostly, this used coffee ground will end on the dump or will be burned with all the other thrash. This should not be necessary, because the coffee ground is really easy to keep separated from other thrash and is a really clean and constant residue.
There are many possibilities to reduce the amount of used coffee ground. At OVPolymers we decided that we should work on a project to solve the ongoing problem of the coffee grounds.
In the Netherlands we throw away about 120 million kilos of used coffee grounds each year. Those numbers are great because it means we are enjoying our coffee very much. The grounds that are left over after making a nice cup of coffee cause a substantial problem for the environment if not processed the right way.
Most of these used coffee grounds will end on landfills or will be burnt with all other waste materials. We, at OVPolymers, think that this is unnecessary because coffee grounds are easy to keep separated from other waste materials. Besides that, coffee grounds are biodegradable, clean and they are a constant residue.
There are many possibilities to reduce the amount of used coffee grounds ending up in landfills. At OVPolymers we decided that we should work on a project to solve the ongoing problem of the coffee grounds. With help from our partners, we started our Coffee Polymer program. This partnership has resulted in the development of our fully biobased Coffee Polymers.
Since we’ve started the project in the fall of 2017, we have been determined to create the best coffee-based polymer available. We started our first test programme with funding from the ‘Nationaal Regieorgaan Praktijkgericht Onderzoek SIA’. This programme resulted in a positive test sample, which motivated us to create a total of three biobased versions of our Coffee Polymer.

Valor-Up wants to make a positive contribution to a socially responsible society with the pillars connecting, innovating and commercializing.
Therefore Valor-Up is delighted to work with OVPolymers. OVPolymers has converted technical innovation into sustainable renewable products. Biobased products based on the most appreciated and the second most traded commodity in the world: coffee!
Valor-Up ensures that coffee residue is collected and processed efficiently and sustainably.
We do this with passion and with the philosophy of making organic raw materials sustainable. By bringing together different branches, we offer commercial and innovational opportunities for all stakeholders. By reusing coffee grounds, materials and energy are handled in a sustainable and responsible manner. That is why recycling coffee has an impact!
OVPolymers and Valor-Up have therefore joined forces so most valued raw materials will not go to waste but is used in products that can be utilized for different industries. Your waste could potentially become a new product with impact.
OVPolymers is a globally operating manufacturer and supplier of biobased polymers made from annually renewable or recycled resources. The OVPolymers biobased materials offer a reduced carbon footprint in comparison to many traditional plastics.
